About the Organisation
Our client is a leading private surgical and specialist hospital in Wellington, recognised for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across a broad range of services. Operating within a modern, state-of-the-art facility, the hospital provides comprehensive surgical services including Orthopaedics, General surgery, Gynaecology, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Plastics and reconstructive surgery, Oral and maxillofacial surgery.
The Role
Reporting to the General Manager, this pivotal leadership position sits within the hospital’s senior leadership team. You will lead a 21-bed surgical ward, managing approximately 20 FTE, with 8 direct reports, including a Ward Administrator, Day Stay Co-Ordinator, 2 x Pre-Assessment Nurses and multiple Shift Coordinators.
This role is responsible for driving high-quality, patient- and consultant-focused care while ensuring operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and workforce optimisation. You will oversee budgets, staffing models, KPIs and service delivery frameworks to ensure the ward operates at peak performance. The ward team is well-established, with many nurses having 10–20+ years’ tenure. While this brings depth and stability, it also requires a confident and resilient leader who can lead change constructively and professionally.
About You
- Bachelor of Nursing with current NZ Annual Practising Certificate
- Minimum 3 years’ leadership experience in acute and/or surgical healthcare.
- Resilient, solution-focused, and capable of making sound decisions under pressure.
- Proven experience managing staffing resources, service budgets, and operational performance.
- Strong financial and operational acumen.
- Experience leading established teams through change.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication capability.
- Comfortable interpreting data to inform workforce and service decisions.
